In his inaugural address, Barack Obama appealed to each of us to give our best as we try to extricate ourselves from this current financial crisis.

→ inaugural: 취임식의 / address: 연설 / appealed to~: ~에게 호소했다. / extricate: 해방되다, 탈출시키다.

해석>> 취임식 연설에서 오바마는 경제 위기탈출을 위해 모두가 각자의 위치에서 최선의 노력을 다해줄 것을 호소했습니다.

But the one thing I want you to notice about them is this: even though this is a very long list, there isn't a single thing on it that involves other human beings. Not one.

→ notice: 주목하다 / involves: 포함하다 / other human beings: 타인

해석>> 하지만 한가지 주목해야 할 부분이 있습니다. 이 목록에 항목이 아주 많음에도 불구하고, 사회적 차원에서 타인에 대한 고려가 한가지도 없다는 사실입니다. 단, 하나도 없습니다. ​

"Practical wisdom," Aristotle told us, "is the combination of moral will and moral skill." A wise person knows when and how to make the exception to every rule, as the janitors knew when to ignore the job duties in the service of other objectives.

→ moral will: 도덕적 자발성 / moral skill: 도덕적 스킬/ janitors: 관리인

해석>> 아리스토텔레스가 말했죠. "실용적 지혜란 도덕적 자발성과 도덕적 스킬의 조합"이라고 말입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 모든 규칙에서 예외로 쳐야할 것이 무엇인지 압니다. 관리인이 상황에 따라 직무 명세서를 무시해야 할 때가 언제인지 아는 것처럼 말입니다

You need permission to be allowed to improvise, try new things, occasionally to fail and to learn from your failures. And you need to be mentored by wise teachers.

→ improvise: 뭐든 있는 것으로 처리하다/ 즉흥적으로 하다. / be mentored by: ~멘토로부터 가르침을 받다.

해석>> 규칙을 벗어나 유도리를 발휘할만한 권한도 있어야 합니다. 새로운걸 시도도 해보고, 실패도 하고 그 실패로부터 배울 수도 있어야 합니다. 그리고 지혜로운 멘토로부터 가르침을 받아야 합니다.

Paying attention to what we do, to how we do it, and, perhaps most importantly, to the structure of the organizations within which we work, so as to make sure that it enables us and other people to develop wisdom rather than having it suppressed.

→ ~so as to: ~를 위하여/ enable: ~ 을 할 수 있게 하다. ~을 가능하게 하다/ suppress: 억압하다, 금하다, 참다

해석>> 그리고 무엇보다, 우리 각자가 일하는 회사가 어떻게 조직되어 있는지에 주의를 기울여 보세요. 우리 안에 잠자고 있던 지혜를 억누르길 멈추고, 오히려 이를 키우고 계발할 수 있도록 말입니다.
